World bicycle Day

The celebration of Bicycle Day had its origin in DeKalb, an American city in the state of Illinois, in 1985. Thomas B. Roberts, then professor at Northern Illinois University — today, professor emeritus of that university —, created the name “bicycle day.” It was in his own home where the first celebration of this day took place. Several years later, he sent an announcement made by one of his students to friends and internet lists to spread the idea and its celebration date. Its first intention was to commemorate Hofmann's first experience with LSD, an accidental exposure to the substance that took place three days before the premeditated self-experiment, on April 16; Since that date fell in the middle of the week, Roberts didn't think it was a good idea to celebrate it on that date, so he chose the 19th to honor Hofmann's first intentional exposure to the substance and his famous trip.
